Environmental goals, tasks and programmes >>

The company achieves its environmental goals (preventing contamination of the environment) by realising tasks it sets itself. The main goals include: reducing harmful emissions into the air, water and soil, and raising the ecological awareness of employees.

Withdrawing PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) >>

In accordance with the Ministry of the Economy ordinance of 24 June 2002 regarding use of PCB in appliances or installations, PKP Energetyka took a set of measures no later than by 30 June 2010 to implement the Ministry's instructions as quickly as possible.
By 2003 instructions had been established and implemented regarding handling of electrical appliances containing the polychlorinated biphenyl EBH-8. Branches subordinate to PKP Energetyka carried out an inventory and marked the appliances (transformers, power capacitors and oil switches) which may contain PCB. Lists were sent to the relevant provincial governors.
In 2006 a contract was signed with the Institute of Power Engineering in Łódź to test samples of oil from transformers and power switches. 2052 samples were tested. Only 19 samples were found to contain inadmissible amounts of PCB.
In 2008 312 power capacitors containing PCB were replaced in passive power compensation systems. This resulted in 9.876 Mg of hazardous waste containing PCB being produced and neutralised.

Withdrawal of asbestos from use >>

PKP Energetyka is also acting to withdraw asbestos as quickly as possible and clean the installations and machines in which it was used. According to the Ministry of the Economy directive these actions should be carried out by 2032. A detailed stocktaking was conducted of all the asbestos present on the premises of PKP Energetyka plants. Asbestos was mainly found in power producing buildings (extinguishing chambers) and technical and administrative buildings (e.g. roofs). PKP Energetyka is successively removing asbestos from machinery and buildings.

Closed environmental protection training >>

Since 2003 PKP Energetyka has been conducting annual closed environmental protection training. Employees, heads of the technical support departments and management take part in the training. Basic training is also organised concerning taking up a job. The purpose of the training is to promote ecological awareness and show how to behave in emergency situations.

Actions taken by PKP Energetyka to limit CO2 emission >>

- modernising the boilers used,
- changing from solid fuel boilers to high efficiency gas and oil boilers and electrical heating,
- undertakings to upgrade thermal insulation in administrative and technical support buildings,

Regular environmental reviews >>

The reviews are intended to assess objectively whether legal requirements are being met with regard to environmental protection. Protocols are drawn up from the reviews conducted, along with instructions and deadlines for their implementation.

Environmental report >>

PKP Energetyka prepares an environmental report concerning the functioning of the environmental management system in the company in accordance with the system procedures.

The Company Environmental Pollution Bank software >>

PKP Energetyka has developed a computer programme enabling a unified system for all the obligations arising from charges for environmental exploitation. The information and data generated by this are passed on to the appropriate environmental protection bodies. The software is adapted to current legislation and has a unified and well organised data base.
