The award of the Polish Civil Engineers and Technicians’ Union, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the General Office of Building Control recognised the use of advanced technological solutions, improvement of safety, environment protection, and occupational health and safety. The investor for the first stage of the Warszawa – Łódź railway line upgrade comprising the reconstruction of the Skierniewice – Łódź Widzew railroad section was Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA, with ARCADIS Profil Sp. z o.o. and Koltech Inwestor Sp. z o.o. companies acting as investor’s representatives. The project consisted in the execution of four basic contracts:
- The upgrading of the Skierniewice – Łódź Widzew section of the railway line,
- The reconstruction of the Skierniewice – Koluszki section of the railway line (consortium leader: Trakcja Polska SA),
- The reconstruction of the Koluszki – Łódź Widzew section of the railway line (consortium leader: PKP Energetyka SA),
- The construction of the rail traffic control system for the Local Traffic Control Centre in Koluszki (contractor: Bombardier Transportation (ZWUS) Polska Sp. z o.o.)
A multidisciplinary contract for the reconstruction of the Koluszki – Łódź Widzew section of the railway line is a project which calls for the use of state-of-the-art technologies. It involves a number of disciplines, including track laying, structural engineering, general construction works, telecommunications engineering, high- and low-voltage power engineering, rail automation, provision of overhead traction lines, environment protection, and power supply. PKP Energetyka SA was the leader of the consortium which executed the contract. Other consortium members included: Przedsiębiorstwo Naprawy Infrastruktury Sp. z o.o., Pomorskie Przedsiębiorstwo Mechaniczno – Torowe Sp. z o.o., Feroco SA, Torpol Sp. z o.o., and Agat SA.
The scope of works performed under the contract included track works (53 km of tracks laid, and 95 turnouts constructed), and road works (13 railroad crossings). The contractors constructed 13 culverts, 13 platforms, one tunnel, and one bridge; and laid nearly 45 km of telecommunication cables. 63,5 km of overhead traction lines, 21 km of power lines for non-traction purposes, 1 traction substation, 1 track sectioning cabin, and 14 transformer stations were upgraded.
The works on the Koluszki – Łódź Widzew section of the railway line involved the use of the most advanced machines and technologies. As a result of upgrading the railroad, the number of passengers and the volume of cargo transported by rail increased, which resulted in a reduction in the road traffic. This in turn contributed significantly to the protection of the natural environment through the reduction of damages caused by exhaust emissions, noise, vibrations, land occupation, and the deterioration of landscape aesthetics. State-of-the-art technological solutions (such as the provision of anti-noise and anti-vibration structures and the construction of acoustic screens) helped reduce noise levels to a significant extent. In order to protect animals, high-visibility elements were fitted to deter wild animals from approaching the coming trains; culverts under the railroad were also constructed or repaired to allow for the migration of small animals. Trees not intended for felling which grew on the railway line construction site were protected from mechanical damage, and new trees and shrubs were planted in empty areas. In order to protect the soil and ground water environment and the surface waters, drainage systems were designed and constructed for the track bed, the railway stations, and the engineering structures. The upgrading also increased safety. The upgraded railroad significantly improved the safety of wild animals, but also people. State-of-the-art equipment fitted on single-level crossings minimised the impact of possible human errors, which directly translated into greater safety of road users.
The project of upgrading of the Warszawa – Łódź railroad was approved for the Sectoral Operational Programme Transport for years 2004 – 2006 under the measure ”Improving railway infrastructure to provide better services between and within agglomerations”. The objective of the programme is to increase the share of rail transport in the total transport between and within major urban centres through the extension of the existing rail infrastructure and the purchase of new rolling stock. The 001 and 017 railway line Warszawa – Łódź connects two largest Polish urban centres. The Łódź – Skierniewice section of the railway line is part of the AGTC line which connects the C-E 65 line (the VI corridor) and the C-E 20 line (Skierniewice – Łuków). The volume of rail traffic between Warszawa and Łódź fluctuates between 25 and 11 thousand passengers per day. Before the railroad was upgraded, a passenger train took 128 minutes to travel from Warszawa Centralna to Łódź Fabryczna (a stretch of 135 km) according to the 2005/2006 timetable, and the cruising speed of the train approximated 62 km/hour. In order to attain the technical speed of 160 km/hour, it was necessary to modernise the railroad and turnouts, as well as to eliminate speed limits on railroad crossings. This way the time of travel could be reduced to approximately 70 minutes.
The Construction of the Year Competition is held annually by the Polish Association of Building Engineers and Technicians in co-operation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the General Office of Building Control. The objective of the competition is to recognise constructions characterised by an outstanding quality of execution. The competition focuses on new or renovated structures or investment processes representing all construction categories, completed by the end of the 1st quarter of 2010 at the latest. The award criteria include: the quality of works, the organisation and duration of the construction, technical and technological solutions employed in the execution of the project, occupational health and safety, the course and form of project financing, formal and legal solutions employed in the investment process, the contribution of the investor to project execution, as well as the impact of the investment on the environment and economy of the region. OF POLISH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS >>
Companies from the railway industry and local authorities took part whose actions, services or products earned particular distinction by contributing to the development, improvement of safety, efficiency or promotion of rail transport. The PKP Energetyka enterprise awarded was the stage in the modernisation of the 4 E 65 (Central Trunk Line) traction grid on the Góra Włodowska – Zawiercie section, conducted in 2007. The latest technology in the field of traction grid modernisation was used for this. The work was carried out using a railway traction system exchange (PWST) train. The job involved designing and constructing a traction grid which would enable trains to travel at 300 km/h. To achieve this, support structures were laid in a gauge of over 3.0 m, Slovak-made composite insulators and Polish-made porcelain bushings were used, enabling the power system to be changed to 25 kV alternating current. In addition to this, system interfaces were also planned and built to allow the grid to work with different power systems. This gave rise to Poland's first section of railway track with a traction grid adapted to a speed of 300 km/h, as well as to 25 kV power. It is currently possible to test this grid's mechanical properties, while the voltage can be switched to 25kV once the relevant power line is completed. This task is part of a project to construct high-speed rail lines in Poland. The E – 65 (CMK) line is the most modern railway line built in this country. It is 224 km long. It is suited to speeds of 160 km/h and up to 200 km/h in some sections.
The jury which decided to award PKP Energetyka the Rail Transport Leader prize included well known, authoritative and trusted scientists and rail industry experts, as well as representatives of the media and business organisations from the branch.
The award, given by the Trade Leader’s Club, is intended to distinguish companies from each branch of industry whose products and services have deserved an excellent appraisal over the year. Winning people's trust, introducing new technology and being seen by the market as a guarantor are synonymous with effort, work and trust. These are the values which the Editorial Office and Trade Leader’s Club hope to reward and stimulate.
The prize-giving ceremonies offer a unique opportunity to present products in the international environment in the presence of business from all around the world.
The award is recognition for our involvement in the promotion of a free, competitive energy market in Poland. We took some of these actions in collaboration with the media campaign organised by the editors of the monthly Nowy Przemysł under the slogan "Customer on the Energy Market". In participating in the campaign alongside economists, specialists from the energy sector and customers using TPA principals during the debates, conferences and publishing actions, we tried to raise and solve the major issues connected with the energy market forming in Poland.
The winners were awarded commemorative statuettes by the competition organisers - representatives of the monthly Świat Energii (Energy World).
This confirms the high quality of our offer as a supplier of electricity and electric power services. The wide range of the company's activities was praised, as was the aim to ensure the best possible customer service. This prestigious distinction put us among those companies which meet the high requirements of the common European market and can therefore successfully compete on it.
The awards go to the companies, which through the implementation of ISO 14001, the environmental management standard, have proven their concern for environmental aspects of their business. Our company has held this certificate since July 2004.
This award confirms that our company takes care to ensure good safe working conditions for all employees. Systematic supervision of Health and Safety rules is of major concern to us. This particularly affects teams working on upgrading or assembling power systems and traction grids. The effects of our concern with improving safety and working conditions can be measured by the systematic decrease in the numbers of accidents at work.
The award is further confirmation of our good position on the power market. It stems from a combination of many years of experience, innovation and flexibility. As well as the title of Mazowieckie Company of the Year, the winners were also presented with Mazowieckie Eagle of Business statuettes.
