50 kph to Ptaszkowa? No big deal!

On Wednesday, January 27th, PKP Energetyka S.A. tested its first “heavy duty mountain” maintenance train (PS-00.M/B no. 03). Along Stróże – Ptaszkowa – Nowy Sącz section, which is along the most difficult railway-climbing road in Poland (winding railway-climbing road of about 20 km with an average slope of 20%) the new vehicle proved to be reliable. The train entered Ptaszkowa railway station at a speed of 50 kph (earlier halted to a stop before reaching the first elevation), not exceeding the allowed engine working temperature.

At the moment, the staff is being trained to operate the “heavy duty mountain” train. Soon, the vehicle will be used in daily tasks carried out by PKP Energetyka S.A. – Południowy Regional Plant, Stróża Section.

The “heavy duty mountain” train by PKP Energetyka S.A. is the first vehicle in the PKP Energetyka rolling stock to have such properties. Enhanced engine power, new solutions (preventing axial transmission damage) and the modernisation of running gear (by developing uniaxial semi-bogies) undoubtedly provide assets allowing the vehicle to be even more efficient (more powerful and doing better on the narrow-gauge curves of the tracks) during works in southern Poland experiencing adverse weather conditions.

The PS-00 maintenance train is a self-propelled, double-articulated railway vehicle. It is intended for repair and maintenance of the traction network devices and non-traction problems. It is equipped with:

  • fixed platforms (with movable platforms for hanging operations);
  • a movable platform (extension of the fixed platform, with a slewing gear and double-block system, ensuring safe works when the traction network on the adjacent track is live);
  • hydraulic crane (with a basket for working at heights);
  • double-arm line adjuster (for works related to the traction network, such as profiling of the contact wire, lifting rope, supporting elements of the system during exchange of the supporting structure, etc.);
  • testing and measuring pantograph (enabling electronic measurement of the traction network suspension height);
  • displacement rollers;
  • hydraulic winches.


The “heavy duty mountain” modernised train has a 350 kW diesel engine (TCD 2015 V084V).

”Top class technical equipment is our priority” said Konrad Tuliński, member of the Management Board of PKP Energetyka S.A. and Technical Director . “Results of tests conducted in such adverse weather conditions have clearly shown that it is a top quality product. For the Południowy Regional Plant, the vehicle will be of invaluable assistance.”

”I strongly believe that the modernised mountain maintenance train will perform very well even in the most severe conditions” said Krzysztof Komorowski from ZPS in Stargard Szczeciński, a representative of the contractor that conducted the modernisation. ”It has more power, it is better equipped and ensures higher safety. It is the best choice for PKP Energetyka S.A.”
