832.25 track-kilometres of the traction network

Between January this year, the workers of PKP Energetyka S.A. were de-icing the traction network, repairing burnt conductors and removing fallen trees from the tracks.

PKP Energetyka S.A. summarised the action as follows:
- 832.26 track-kilometres of the traction network de-iced  (over 550 track-kilometres on main lines) – twice the original estimates
- 13 MV lines (137.4 km) damaged
- 145 HV poles broken
- 100 insulators damaged
- 18 traction substations cut off from the power supply (15 of them were not supplied by external suppliers)
- 300 workers of PKP Energetyka S.A. and 24 maintenance trains working

Estimated costs incurred by PKP Energetyka S.A. only in the abovementioned period amount to approx. PLN 2,150,000.

Various de-icing methods were adopted, among others, the mechanical de-icer. The method was effective solely for ice layers not exceeding 10 mm. This is why this solution was used to de-ice approx. 8% of the traction network (62 track-kilometres). The practice proved hand de-icing to be the most efficient method. One maintenance train de-iced the traction network at the rate of approx. 1 track-kilometre per hour.

This weather anomaly, which occurs once in decades, took the form of intense rain falling at -3 degrees Celsius, freezing instantly on everything, including the traction network. This resulted in ice coating, 10 to 30 mm thick, preventing the operation of electric trains (locomotives).

PKP Energetyka S.A. is the power enterprise with a nationwide presence, in operation since 2001. Isolated from railway structures, the company is presently an active stakeholder in Poland’s electricity market. It sells and distributes electricity (traction power for the needs of railway carriers and non-traction power for other customers via direct connections or as TPA) and provides electric power services. PKP Energetyka S.A. caters to approximately 45,000 customers, including 37,000 institutional customers, over 7,000 thousand individual customers and 25 railway operators. During the first six months of 2009, the company sold a total of 1,729 GWh of electricity.
