Full capacity of the Warsaw-Krakow route

PKP Energetyka S.A. is struggling to de-ice the traction network using all available means, as it disables passage of electric trains. In total, over 140 track-kilometres have been cleared off already. Only last night, our workers removed ice along 40 km of the traction network.

Due to the efforts of PKP Energetyka S.A., the passage of electric locomotives on the Warsaw-Krakow route is now possible. From 08:15, full capacity of the line was restored. Six maintenance trains worked last night only along the a/m section (approx. 100 individuals). By 10:20 (Tuesday), train passage was possible along the Starzyny – Kozłów route, at 12:10 traffic on one track along the Kozłów – Tunel section was resumed, at 15:05 one track was cleared off  along the Miechów – Tunel route. At 14:30, traffic between Krakow and Niedźwiedź using the electric traction was resumed. At 20:45, power between Miechów and Tunel was re-supplied. At 3:50 (January 13th), the Słomniki – Niedźwiedź route was cleared off, the same being done at 5:25 along the Tunel – Miechów route.

Today, PKP Energetyka S.A. is focusing its works on routes starting in Częstochowa. Along line no. 61 Częstochowa – Koniecpol, 50 km of the railway route is covered with ice, whereas along Częstochowa – Lubliniec, about 40 km. At 02:35 (January 13th), 20 km of the traction network between Zawiercie and Częstochowa was de-iced, consequently enabling operation of one track of the electric traction. The works will be continued on the second track, along the section of 44 km.

De-icing of the traction network is not the only task to be performed by PKP Energetyka S.A. Other tasks include: removal of trees downed by wind and snow obstructing the railway tracks (e.g. along railroad 131, section Działoszyn – Herby Stare), as well as repair of the medium voltage line supplying the railway equipment (only along the Herby Nowe – Kłobuck section, 37 poles are broken).

It is estimated that in the most difficult moments, a total of 200 km of railroads were covered with ice.

PKP Energetyka S.A. is the power enterprise with a nationwide presence, in operation since 2001. Isolated from railway structures, the company is presently an active stakeholder in Poland’s electricity market. It sells and distributes electricity (traction power for the needs of railway carriers and non-traction power for other customers via direct connections or as TPA) and provides electric power services. PKP Energetyka S.A. caters to approximately 45,000 customers, including 37,000 institutional customers, over 7,000 thousand individual customers and 25 railway operators. During the first six months of 2009, the company sold a total of 1,729 GWh of electricity.
