PKP Energetyka S.A. exchanged the traction network along the Railway Main Line (CMK)

Reduced travel time, that is enhanced train speed, and passenger comfort are the main objectives for employees exchanging the traction network along the section from Woszczowa Płn. to Knapówka (section of the Railway Main Line ensuring fast connection between Warsaw, Krakow and Katowice). The application of relevant solutions (e.g. extending clearance gauge of structures supporting the traction network) will allow adjusting the traction network for the passage of trains with a speed of 300 to 350 kph.

The works along the section Włoszczowa Płn. – Knapówka were conducted on both tracks. Renovation works on the traction network conducted by PKP Energetyka S.A. involved the complete disassembly of the traction network together with supports and foundations, as well as restoration of the protective layer of the railway tracks (soil consolidation and, if necessary, broken stone replenishment). During the works, 10.4 of track-kilometres of traction network were replaced. The new traction network (2C120-2C-3) was suspended from single and gate-type supporting structures, using pile foundations. In line with the changed system of power supply along the Railway Main Line into 2 x 25 kV AC, suspended isolators adjusted to this system were applied. In weight anchoring of the contact system, polymer concrete counterweights were used; and an electric shock protection system, using the group bonding system, was implemented for the traction network.

The first stage of works commenced on 26 October 2009 and involved laying pile foundations, the assembly of single and gate type supporting structures, and alternation of the traction network along track no. 1. The works were completed on 18 December 2009. The second stage commenced on 8 March 2010 and involved modernisation of the line above track no. 2. It was completed on 29 March 2010, with simultaneous completion of the works on the section Włoszczowa Płn. – Knapówka.

The project was implemented in line with the Design and Build system. The alternation design was developed by Biuro Projektów Kolejowych w Łodzi S. A. The Electric Power Work Plant in Słotwiny was the main contractor on the part of PKP Energetyka S. A. Świętokrzyskie Regional Plant also participated in the alternation works.

The equipment included a heavy-duty maintenance train, a pile driver for enclosing pile foundations (KK2750H 01), a universal rail haulage vehicle, locomotives and a train for stream replacement of the traction network (PWST).

”Reliable, top quality technical equipment, just as this rather unique in Europe PWST train, as well as professional, experienced and competent staff guarantee proper implementation of even the most demanding works. This certainty is the key factor for our contractors, and for us the key to market success” – said Tadeusz Skobel, President of the Management Board of PKP Energetyka S.A. ”I am very glad that as a company we can actively contribute to favourable changes in the Polish railway.”

The total net value of the project amounted to PLN 6,066,871. The committee approving the works had no reservations as to their execution and appreciated the contribution, engagement and professional approach of PKP Energetyka S.A. employees.
