PKP Energetyka: electricity and heat from one's own sources

PKP Energetyka S.A. has launched preparations in order to build its own electricity and heat sources. Together with the Inven Group consultancy agency, the company has been analysing the rationale of the investment.

PKP Energetyka S.A. and Inven Group have considered the implementation of 3 projects for building cogeneration-based gas sources with a total power of 125 MWe. At the moment, preparatory works preceding construction of the new power sources are pending.

Having one's own generation sources is one of the key components of our strategy. We have consistently built our position on energy distribution and the sales market. More than half the volume of energy sold by PKP Energetyka relates to non-traction power that is supplied to customers from outside the railway industry. While having one's own generation sources, we will be able to satisfy some electricity demand of our current and prospective customers. An important aspect of this investment is also the possibly enhanced efficiency of our business”  commented Tadeusz Skobel, President of PKP Energetyka S.A.

PKP Energetyka and Inven Group are in the process of finalising the technical and theoretical assumptions of the project. In addition, arrangements concerning collaboration with local heat generation plants are being ultimately specified. Environmental and location decisions refer to two heat and power plants with a capacity of 50 MW each and to one plant with a capacity of 25 MW. The investments would ensure similar thermal power. For the fuel, gas is being considered for use in all three projects. Also, biomass is another option taken into account by the partners in case of some planned outputs. These will constitute low-emission sources, using state-of-the-art cogeneration technology.

PKP Energetyka S.A. is planning to build two larger units in Warsaw on the railway premises, one in Olszynka Grochowska, and the other in Odolany. A heat and power plant with an output of approx. 25 MW may be erected in Przemyśl.

The value of projects and funding

Analyses have shown that for such extensive undertakings, investment expenditures will amount to approx. 1 million euro per MWe. In total, the investment will be worth of a few hundred million PLN. PKP Energetyka S.A. has been analysing various funding possibilities for the projects.
