PKP Energetyka S.A. at the 3rd Railway Congress

The 3rd Railway Congress was held in Warsaw on 5 November 2013. The event was opened by Sławomir Nowak, Minister of Transport. The Congress was attended by such guests as board presidents and board members of PKP Group companies, economists, representatives from trade unions and railway market experts. A series of debates were held during the Congress. They referred, among others, to managing PKP Group (including privatisation and restructuring), changes in the Polish railway transport market, the condition of passenger and freight operations, and cost management in railway transport. PKP Energetyka was represented by Wojciech Szwankowski, Member of the Board and Sales Director, and Andrzej Wołosz, Director of Trade Division.

During the PKP Group management debate, Wojciech Szwankowski mentioned the fact that PKP Energetyka S.A. acts as a partner and advisor of customers in railway sector, implementing a series of initiatives aiming at optimisation of railway operators’ expenditure on electricity.
Such initiatives refer, among others, to the exemption of railway operators from the excise tax (savings of PLN 20 per MWh) and granting them allowances in subsidies to RES; this solution is already used in other European countries. Wojciech Szwankowski also mentioned the model of energy recuperation, which is technically more and more feasible, although some legal barriers persist.

Andrzej Wołosz contributed to the debate on cost management and energy consumption of the railway transport processes. The meeting, chaired by Zbigniew Szafrański from the Railway Institute (IK), was attended by representatives from Polish and foreign manufacturers of rolling stock (in particular PESA, NEWAG and Siemens).
