PKP Group prepared for winter

1,700 rail cars, 280 locomotives, back-up rolling stock, nearly 300 snow removal vehicles, 24/7 repair service and 25,000 employees – those are the foundations of efficient management at PKP Group during the winter season.

Passengers at the station …
During peak times, there will be 130 information officers at the 19 largest railway stations to assist passengers with finding the right platform and connection. The information on train operations will be also available on the Internet, on the websites of PKP SA, PKP Intercity, Facebook and Twitter.

”We continue the integration of operations inside PKP Group with a focus on passengers. Our companies try to foresee all possible scenarios and adequate responses. We place our bets on well-planned and well-prepared rolling stock, as well as full passenger information” says Piotr Ciżkowicz, member of the Management Board at PKP S.A.

With regard to the upcoming winter, PKP S.A. has decided to keep all railway stations open 24/7 whenever the temperature drops below -20 °C. 40 stations will not be closed for night maintenance breaks between December 15th and March 15th. This will give passengers uninterrupted access to food catering outlets and hot drink dispensers. Furthermore, in emergency conditions, with trains delayed by more than 120 minutes, hot drinks will be served free of charge at railway stations in the 19 largest cities.

PKP Intercity secured nearly 1,700 rail cars and 280 locomotives in total for the upcoming winter.  Out of that number, approx. 20% serves as back-up, standing by at major stations, such as Poznań, Warszawa, Kraków, Katowice, Wrocław and Gdańsk. Back-up rail cars will be used as additional train fleet during the peak times and in emergencies. Rolling stock will be served by 4,000 employees.

”For us, winter is the time of intense work. We prepared rolling stock and 24/7 technical service to ensure the safety of travel to our passengers. Application of devices preventing excessive icing of chassis will be the novelty in technical service of trains. We are the only railway operator in Poland using such a system” says Janusz Malinowski, President of the Management Board at PKP Intercity.

The operating principle of the system consists in spraying the train chassis with a heated liquid, which forms a coating protecting against freezing and ice build-ups. The anti-freezing agent used   is completely biodegradable and environmentally-friendly. The system has been tested in Scandinavian countries and was also purchased by German railways.

In case of unforeseen events due to unfavourable weather conditions, passengers will be notified of possible train changes and transfers. In case of delays exceeding one hour, passengers of trains with restaurant cars will receive hot drinks.

Polskie Linie Kolejowe and PKP Energetyka fully prepared

PLK’s most important task is to maintain winter serviceability of railway lines. The winter serviceability programme of PLK covers 19,000 km of railway lines, 42,000 turnouts, 26,000 bridges and overpasses, 16,000 level crossings, 18,000 buildings, and platforms. Winter serviceability operations will be carried out, depending on weather conditions, by as many as 16,000 people.

”We build on our experience from previous years. Permanent monitoring of weather conditions, prepared teams of workers, and snow removal vehicles, available 24/7 at major locations, are there to ensure winter serviceability. Current cooperation
with railway operators will allow for organisation of travel even in the case of obstacles on railway lines”
says Remigiusz Paszkiewicz, President of the Management Board at PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A.

The infrastructure administrator has 166 machines for the removal of snow from tracks and turnouts, including 16 snow removal units, 84 snowploughs and 66 snow removers. In addition, 87 maintenance trains were ensured to remove failures in the traction network, half of which is suitable for the removal of ice or frost. There are 179 rapid-response teams to remedy failures and defects in the tracks and traffic control equipment. Selected traction sections will be additionally coated with special preparation preventing an accumulation of rime.

Pursuant to procedures, under very difficult weather conditions commuter traffic, providing transport to schools and work places, as well as transport of food, coal and other fuels, will be the top priority. PLK budget for maintenance of winter serviceability is at the previous year’s level, i.e. PLN 85 million.
