Preliminary causes of the fire at the traction substation “Warszawa Wschodnia”

Damaged insulation of the power supply cable was the probable cause of fire at the Warszawa Wschodnia traction substation, as results from the initial findings of the expert team of PKP Energetyka S.A. The value of damages and repair costs reached approx. PLN 300,000.

The substation was deactivated on July 11th due to fire; the energy supply to the traction network was restored after 2 hours by establishing connection with the nearest substations. Pursuant to the preliminary findings, the fire was caused by damage to the insulation of the 3 kV DC power cable in the substation’s cable duct.

There was a remote control and monitoring cabinet located at the fire inception point, and it was the first to suffer damages. The fire was detected immediately by the dispatcher who sent Electric Power Emergency Services to the location. Electricians  arriving at the location called Fire Services.

Normal operation of the substation was restored on Tuesday, July 16th. Until remote controls are restored,  the substation is being operated using local controls. The Warszawa Wschodnia substation is a part of the system supplying the traction network in the eastern part of Warsaw.
