PKP Energetyka S.A. to install modern lighting in the city of Łódź

During the project for road lighting in Łódź, PKP Energetyka S.A. will upgrade 1,224 lamppost fixtures using LED technology to light streets in housing districts and 608 sodium-vapour lamp fixtures along the main streets. The project will be completed under the Energy-Saving Street Lighting – SOWA programme. The tender procedure won by the fifth largest electricity seller amounts to PLN 2.3 million. The work will be divided into four stages to be completed by 30 July 2015.

The savings arising from the lighting upgrade to be completed by PKP Energetyka S.A. amount to PLN 300,000 a year. The company will replace fixtures at more than 1,800 lampposts included in the project. The new lighting will result in improved safety of the residents living in the housing districts. LED lamps, with white light-emitting diodes, will significantly improve visibility after dark. At the same time, such lamps will reduce electricity consumption by approx. 25%, and approx. 50% after replacement of mercury-vapour lamps.

Some funds for the lamppost upgrade are sourced from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The total co-financing from the nationwide SOWA scheme for the modernisation of systems in administrative districts will amount to PLN 356 million. There are about 900,000 lighting fixtures to be replaced in Poland. The annual cost of street lighting incurred by local governments can amount up to PLN 680 million.

”Electric power services constitute one of the pillars of our business. We are glad to be able to carry out this project, which is important for the local community. The project will contribute to the improved safety of residents living in Łódź’s housing districts and drivers on the roads. We are also planning other projects connected with the modernisation and installation of lighting. We have great experience in this field, so we can complete similar work quickly and effectively,” said   Tadeusz Skobel, President of the Management Board of PKP Energetyka S.A.

PKP Energetyka S.A. will conduct the lamppost upgrade project in Łódź in four stages. Each stage will be carried out for a different range of streets. The first two will be completed in the middle of December this year, the third one by the end of April 2015, and the last one by 30 July 2015. In total, the work will include 14 streets and three housing districts.
